Hi! I’m Erin Balfour (she/her), founder of Indie Publishers Club. I created it because I wanted a place for indie publishing enthusiasts to be able to come together and worship at the church of the printed medium. I’ve worked in publishing since 2001 in various roles, from editorial assistant to writer to sub-editor, to independently publishing my own wedding magazine. I even work in distribution at the moment as I hand deliver my local community magazine (a.k.a. getting paid to go on walks and listen to music and podcasts!). As far as publishing goes: I’ve been around…

Print, typography and design have been passions of mine since I was about six years of age, and I will never, ever, stop being a fan, an advocate, a creator.

I’m also lucky enough to be in a position to run this as a non-profit. When you buy a magazine from me, it covers all the costs of production, admin, design, website, etc., and, most importantly, it enables me to pay my contributors. It’s my passion to uphold publishing standards and pay people for their work. I want us all to benefit away from the ugly Capitalist BS hellscape of monetising everything for huge profits, and all the popularity contests and vanity metrics that go along with that circus, and rather exist more in creativity, community, sharing, and looking out for one another.

Here’s what you can expect from Indie Publishers Club:

  • A shop where you’ll be able to buy the magazines I’ve made. I cover weddings at the moment, but am planning publications on such topics as ghosts, witchcraft, horror movies, folklore, and more.

  • A blog where I’ll be sharing things like my thoughts about the publishing industry, my own experiences of indie publishing, interviews with creators, and so on.

  • A newsletter rather than a social media presence. I am not a fan of social media…

I also have some BIG plans for this place, so stick around…

The Plans

  • A course on how to publish your own magazine.

  • Free resources to help you on your own indie publishing adventure! They’ll appear in the shop and I’ll heads you up on the newsletter before they drop.

  • A community space where we can all hang out and be in love with zines and magazines together.

  • The Book Club where I’ll share titles that might help you with the business of selling your print publications as well as making them in the first place.

  • A podcast – everyone else has one…

If this sounds like something you’d love to be a part of, then sign up to my newsletter to be the first to hear about all these things!
